We carry a maximum of 12 passengers per trip and all can be seated. There are 12 seats available on board and plenty of standing space. We have forward facing, fully upholstered seating with back and headrests and front pockets, not unlike an aboard an aircraft, a very comfortable, luxurious way to travel. We also have partial canopy cover which gives passengers protection in rainy/windy weather whilst still retaining excellent viewing. The canopy is removed totally in good weather. There is comfortable standing space with a rail out of the back and passengers can take it in turns to enjoy this space for panoramic, uninterrupted 360 degree viewing and photography once at Noss. If the weather is very calm, the skipper will allow a couple of passengers to stand up on deck whilst we travel to and from Noss. Safety is our priority at all times and seating and standing decisions remain firmly with the skipper at all times.
We would suggest so. Shetland Seabird Tours runs the most popular Noss tour & we are the only wildlife boat tour company running trips to Noss at least twice daily throughout the whole season. To avoid disappointment we do recommend advance booking. This can be done directly by calling Phil & Rebecca on 07767 872260, online via our website booking system, or directly through the Lerwick Tourist Information Centre, either in person or by calling them on 01595 693434. If you are in Lerwick & decide that you fancy a trip to Noss with us that same day, please call into the Tourist Office or call Phil & Rebecca to see if there are spaces, if there are, you can always jump aboard (not literally!) last minute & join us!
No, sorry, we do not allow smoking on board our vessel under any circumstances both for fire safety regulations & for the comfort & health of our none-smoking fellow passengers.
We do not offer food & drink as standard, but do deliver food to the ever hungry Noss Gannets! Our trips are a comfortable 2-3 hours & to be honest, you will probably not be thinking about eating & drinking with the magnificent views and wildlife spectacles in front of you! Your hands will probably be glued to your binoculars & cameras! We do run ‘Early Bird – Best Light’ morning trips & ‘Simmer Dim’ evening bespoke trips sporadically throughout the season (keep an eye on our calendar or contact us!) & on these trips we do offer complimentary tea or coffee & biscuits!
You are welcome to bring your own food & drinks on board.
Every one of our Noss trips features fun, informative, current & original commentary from Skipper Phil Harris, a live long passionate birder & naturalist. We also have on board for sale, ‘Discover Shetland’s Birds’ by company co-owner & expert guide Rebecca Nason & Paul Harvey. Please ask to look at a copy! Softback are £19.99 & hardback £24.99. Paul Harvey offers very informative facts & information second to none on all of Shetland’s breeding, wintering & migrant birds whilst Rebecca delivers the high quality photographic content. A must have book for anyone interested in Shetland’s bird life.
We highly recommend binoculars and cameras if you have them. The views of seabirds and scenes are spectacular without them but for closer views, binoculars can be a welcome addition. If you do not have them, Shetland Seabird Tours carries high quality, waterproof Opticron binoculars which are perfect for seabird & marine mammal watching & you are welcome to borrow these throughout the trip. Photographic opportunities can be incredible, so if you like taking photographs, this is really a trip for you – don’t come without a camera, be it a professional SLR and long lens or a smaller iPhone, or GoPro. You won’t be disappointed. Please be aware that you carry all your own equipment at your own risk.
We DO HAVE AN EMERGENCY TOILET FACILITY on board. But please ensure that you use the excellent public toilet facilities opposite the Victoria Pier slipway prior to departure. Our trips are 2-3 hours so it is best to make sure you go before departure! The toilets are less than a minutes walk from the pier. Having an emergency toilet facility on board should give all our passengers peace of mind when cruising with us however – if you need to go – you can go!
We would suggest, in any month on Shetland, that you wear layers as the weather and temperature can change dramatically over short periods of time. Please bring warm clothes and at least a wind proof outer layer. We would recommend a waterproof jacket, although our rib won’t cause you to get wet, small showers are common and if we are out at the back of Noss, you still want to see and enjoy the views and seabirds on deck! We recommend stout outdoor footwear for this type of outdoor trip. Don’t forget a hat! You can take clothes off but if you don’t have them with you – you can’t put em on!
Our large orange and black, partial canopy covered rib cruiser is moored up throughout the season in Victoria Pier, next to the Victoria Pier car park, opposite the public toilets and Commerical Street. Please aim to be at Victoria Pier slipway 15 minutes before your actual departure time. You will see our large Shetland Seabird Tours sign, which is our meeting point, at the top of the slipway surrounded by some other boat trip advertising. We won’t sail without you if you have a confirmed booking, if you are going to be a little late, please call Phil on (0) 7767872260 and we will wait for you.
As long as you have provided us with a contact phone number as requested on booking, we will contact you if the weather is looking adverse and may affect your trip departure time. We will endeavour to provide you with an alternative date and time if the weather is too bad to sail and warn you of any possible cancellation. If you are not able to make another time when the weather is fine for sailing, we will of course offer you a full refund. Our priority is your safety and we want you to have the best possible experience with us.
There is always something to see here on Shetland but the species and numbers of seabirds increase from the end of April to the end of August. We operate our scheduled seabird trips from the 1st May through into October, weather permitting. Gannet feeding frenzies are a daily feature of our trips around Noss NNR until the end of August – come and get a real Gannet’s Eye View!
We can also be chartered throughout the season and out of season for bespoke bird, photo, sightseeing, survey, diving & fishing excursions. We operate the only commercially coded large Stormforce Redbay 8.4 rib in Shetland. Please get in touch for our operational availabilities & half day and day rates.
